A Good Antique Civil War - Plains Indian War Period Federal Officer's Leather Waist Belt with Eagle & Wreath Buckle. This is the style that was worn on the sword belt of many Civil War - Plains Indian War cavalrymen and officers. It has the beautiful spread wing pattern eagle in the center of the buckle. The eagle has the ribbon coming from the beak that reads the motto in Latin that reads E PLURIBUS UNUM, (OUT OF MANY, ONE!). This is the pattern that has the integrally cast wreath around the eagle with the pebble grain style background. On the back of the buckle it has the original large size keeper hook intact. The buckle is attached to the original leather waist belt that has many visible original inspector's marks on the back side.
NOTE - The brass Eagle buckle was designed after the pattern 1851 Federal Officer's buckle. There are several variations of this form of buckle and was produced up to the Spanish American War. A very interesting feature to point out is that the Eagle's head is facing to the left where the majority of the buckles are to the right.
THE HOLSTER - The holster fits a COLT Model 1860 Army or 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver. It is my opinion that the holster's markings ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / T.W.G. appears spurious. However, the holster has enough wear and age cracks to be considered a very good condition original holster with questionable markings or an old reproduction used for reenactments and now looks original that someone stamped the markings on to confuse or fool the collector. Priced accordingly
