First Christmas Card was printed in 1843 for Mr Henry Cole, founder of the Victoria and Albert Museum, who had left writing Christmas letters late and who ordered some cards which he would only have to sign. Some of the cards were sold to the public and the fashion caught on. Early cards favoured Victorian pin-up girls, gruesome humour. After 1900 flowers and religious subjects became popular: flowers, stage coaches and village scenes followed in the 1930s. Daily Herald Archive 18th December 1962.
