Our latest collaboration with SlowDigz is dyed using compost, yes, compost! The Cosmic Compost print is created with used dye material. Most of the used dyestuff comes from past Botanical Bundle Dye workshops and other dye projects. The used dye material from steamed onion skins to madder root is saved, frozen, and when ready to create Cosmic Compost pieces, is mixed with spent flower petals and given a light dusting of iron salts. The results are abstract patterns of grays and blacks intermixed with pops of color, including pink and purple from the natural pigments found in cochineal and logwood. The addition of iron shifts the mood of the dye material and creates a dramatic palette reminiscent of the cosmos. Lisa Rogers is the owner and natural dyer behind SlowDigz in California. She's inspired by nature, hand dying on natural fibers using raw botanicals, insects, and metals. She uses flowers, leaves, stems, and roots from her own dye garden along with local leaves to create color and design.
