Monstrous and unchecked, Mortal Kombat is the chimera of gaming. For some, it falls in the camp of shock art of the 90's with unprecedented levels of violence and gore. For others, it defined a generation of arcade gaming at its finest. But no matter its reception, Mortal Kombat's influence -- and its ever-evolving out
Monstrous and unchecked, Mortal Kombat is the chimera of gaming. For some, it falls in the camp of shock art of the 90's with unprecedented levels of violence and gore. For others, it defined a generation of arcade gaming at its finest. But no matter its reception, Mortal Kombat's influence -- and its ever-evolving output -- on video games and culture at large is undeniable, striking a potent chord of button mashing competition and macabre humor. Mortal Kombat IX was billed as a reboot, a game that returns to the core value of the original with a fresh update on its dark, fantastic universe. To achieve this vision, Warner Brothers' NetherRealm Studios -- formerly the legendary Midway Games -- partnered with acclaimed UK-based Atomhawk digital art studio. Unique backgrounds feature distinctive technical elements: Light flickering through trees leaves and lifelike shadows on the characters; birds and bugs make the game’s world feel alive. A muted, cinematic palette veers away from previous editions’ bright, cartoonish colors. “For this version, we wanted to dial down the campiness a bit and up the serious level,” Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon, was quoted “Not to the point [where] we have no humor, but we did want this game’s tone to match its dark and gritty visuals.” Warner Bros. and Lord Mischief Entertainment have partnered up with VGA Gallery to release a suite of new prints from Mortal Kombat IX. They are available as part of an edition of 275 and printed on fine archival paper, hand numbered and with a certificate of authenticity. Specifications Hand Numbered and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity Unframed: 12 x 19.15 inches
